Name: Language Builder
Publisher: Special Education Store
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
The Special Education Store publishes quite a few great speech and language apps (I have six of them). Language Builder is a great place to start when purchasing their apps. Before beginning, make sure you set the level you would like to use (1, 2, or 3). The app offers a variety of true-to-life photographs that the children can describe. Each picture gives the prompt "make a sentence about the picture." This is probably my least favorite part of the app. The voice can "get to you" after awhile! (You can turn the audio instructions off in the settings area.) Once this photograph is shown, the app gives you three choices across the bottom - record, skip picture, and hint. You can have your child or client come up with a picture or have them imitate a phrase or sentence about what they see. You can record their phrase or sentence. I really like this feature in the app because you can then email the recording to the parent or to yourself and hold on to it for diagnostic purposes later on. It is amazing to email a few samples within the first week of using the app and then in a month, do the same thing. It is nice to see the changes! The hint feature give you or the child a sentence starter for help. I have used the skip feature on occasion when I didn't like the photograph or felt that the child I was working with would not be interested.
Another option built into the app is the ability to buy more images. As often as I have used this app in therapy, I have not felt the "need" to purchase the additional packs. I like that we can practice the same pictures over and over again and work on coming up with new ways to describe the pictures. The game packs are available for $1.99 more each or you can purchase all of them for $19.99.
Another reason this app tops my favorite list is because it can be used with a variety of different ages - from 2 all the way to 100+! Have fun with this one!
