Here is another one of my therapy favorites!!!
Name: Fun With Directions
Published By: Hamaguchi Apps for Speech, Language, and Auditory Development
My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Targets: Following directions, colors, spatial concepts, auditory memory, and auditory processing. It specifically targets the demands: give, touch, close, open, top, middle, bottom, push, color, and erase.
How to use: The home page is easy to navigate. It allows you to set up and store basic settings for different users. (It appears that you can only store three, but if you add more users, just use your finger to "swipe over" the user names and it move so you can see the others.) Once a user is added, the "levels" are stored so they do not need to be reset each and every time. One of my favorite parts about this app are the different complexity levels that it allows for - easy, intermediate, and advanced. Each level targets all of the ten demands, but each level uses an increased complexity of language.
This app also features a concept called "Super Star Directions." (You can turn this on or off in the settings section of the app.) The Super Star Direction give the child a direction to follow and then requests that they tell "What they did." It is a great way to incorporate expressive language.
I start all my students off at the beginning level, and if it is too simple, I quickly move them through to the most appropriate level for their skill set. I like using the beginning level to start because it increases the child's confidence level and gains their attention.
Once you are ready to begin, touch the "Play" screen. The app gives the child a direction to complete. On the bottom of the screen there are two choices - "Hear again" if you want the direction to be repeated or "New Direction." The "New Direction" allows for a new direction using the same "target." At the top of the screen there is the choice for a "New Concept." This allows you to rotate through the different targets.
When I use this with my clients I try to incorporate as much expressive language as I can. I will them to tell me what they did (e.g., Opened door), what was behind the door, etc.
This app is well worth the $9.99! Hamaguchi Apps offers a total of 8 different apps, including lite versions that are available for $0.99. I highly recommend the full version of this app. Check back in for a review of the other apps that this developer offers.
